'Green' Valentine's Day Gift Ideas by Jennifer Pittsinger
Valentine’s Day along with most other holidays is not one of the greenest. If you are trying to be more environmentally responsible this year, there may be a few things you can do to turn this famous pink holiday green and save some green!
Chocolate
Try an alternative to the big prepackaged heart shaped box of chocolate. Create your own box of chocolate at home. Go to your favorite cookbook or the internet for ideas. My favorite website of choice in this situation would be www.pinterest.com! If you don’t have the time to make your own goodies, you could also make a trip out to Mary of Puddin Hill. They have mix and match chocolates by the pound and the best chocolate covered strawberries! They are open through Valentine’s Day and chocolate is their thing! No telling how long chocolates in those heart shaped boxes in other stores have been there, plus you are buying locally keeping dollars in Greenville. Of course you can also choose another green alternative and give organic chocolate.
Valentine Cards
While the cards at the store are so nicely written and pretty, they can be expensive. Most of the time they get read and get tossed. Why not grab your construction paper and creativity and make your own? You know…just like when you are a kid. My kids made theirs for their classmates one year instead of buying the premade ones. They had fun doing it and it was less expensive . Homemade things always seem to mean more…especially on Valentine’s Day.
Gifts of the heart
Speaking of making things here are some inexpensive and green ideas for gift giving. Make a CD of your sweetie’s favorite music.
Create a special dinner instead of going out to eat. Our family likes to celebrate at home with a special dinner. I think my kids favorite was when we made homemade heart shaped pizzas!
Give a coupon book with things they can redeem like: breakfast in bed or free car wash, back rub…you get the idea. Just be creative.
All of these things involve less waste, packaging and less fuel. The gifts I love the most are the ones that don’t necessarily cost a lot but come from the heart.

What is Recycling?
Recycling is the process of taking a product at the end of its useful life and using all or part of it to make another product. The internationally recognized symbol for recycling includes three arrows moving in a triangle. Each arrow represents a different part of the recycling process, from collection to re-manufacture to resale. Examples of products that contain the symbol are plastic bottles (usually on the bottom) and cardboard boxes. Even if a product doesn't contain the recycling symbol, it may still be recyclable.
If you live in the City of Greenville or surrounding area, the following items can be recycled. It is not necessary to sort recycled items.
Aluminum (no aerosol cans or aluminum foil) Plastics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 (no plastic bags or styrofoam) Glass Paper, shredded paper, and junk mail Tin and steel (no paint cans) Milk jugs Cardboard Newspaper, magazines, and phone books
Recycling is a simple way that you can help the environment and preserve natural resources. Get involved today. To obtain a recycling bin or cart, or for recycle pickup days and city routes, visit the IESI website link on this page.
